Learn About Proper Aftercare

Following the correct aftercare procedures will ensure that your tattoo heals correctly and looks great for years to come. Keep the following steps in mind after receiving your tattoo:
  • Keep your bandage in place for a maximum of 1-2 hours in order to prevent contamination from airborne bacteria
  • When you're ready to remove the bandage, gently wash the ointment off your tattoo area using anti-bacterial soap and lukewarm water. Use your hand instead of a washcloth or anything abrasive
  • Pat (not rub) the area completely dry with a clean cloth and paper towel, then apply a light ointment (not Neosporin)
  • Work your chosen ointment into the tattoo and blot the area with a dry paper towel to remove excess ointment. Repeat this process at least twice a day for the next 2-3 days
  • Keep the area clean, using lotion when needed instead of ointment, to keep your skin soft and healing. Your skin needs air to heal, so let it breathe. Use lotion sparingly

Practice Ongoing Tattoo Care

After a few days of proper aftercare, you may begin to notice peeling or scabbing in the area over your tattoo. Itching may also occur. Be sure not to scratch or pick at the area, though light slaps may help relieve the itch. If your tattoo starts to peel, use lotion more often; if it scabs, simply leave it alone.

Once your tattoo is healed, you'll still need to care for it. Protect it from UV rays that can cause fading and damage with a high SPF sunblock.

You may notice gaps in lines of your tattoo or think about coming in for a touch-up. Please wait at least two weeks after the initial appointment before coming back, and we'll gladly fill in those lines and touch up your tattoo. If you have any serious concerns or other questions, feel free to contact us.
